Renowned fashion brand Lacoste has recently expanded its involvement in the crypto and metaverse realms. As revealed by non-fungible token (NFT) attorney Michael Kondoudis through a tweet, Lacoste filed for trademarks with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) on February 17th this year. The applications encompass a diverse range of items, including virtual clothing, footwear, and eyewear; sports gear stores vending products within these digital domains; extended reality environments; advertising services linked to cryptocurrency transactions or assets such as NFTs; education on blockchain technology or cryptocurrencies; and even real estate offerings connected to the metaverse.

Lacoste is not alone in this pursuit: luxury watchmakers Tag Heuer, Hublot, Yves Saint Laurent, Hermes, Victoria’s Secret, and Rolex have all recently applied for similar trademarks for their brands. It appears that major corporations across various industries are also adopting this trend – Visa, Formula One, Mercedes Benz, JPMorgan, Jack Daniels, Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Celine Dion are just a few examples reported by Finbold.

The pace at which companies file trademark applications related to NFTs and associated products or services may have decelerated since March 2021. However, it has experienced exponential growth compared to the previous year’s figures. In 2022 alone, there were 7,746 filing requests, while 5,850 pertained to those involving aspects connected with the metaverse or security markers, representing a 200% increase.
